This site has information pertaining to the licensing and development of Linux and other GNU operating systems and GNU software.
- Distributions
- CentOS - CentOS (Community ENTerprise Operating System) is essentially a clone of Red Hat with all the Red Hat trademarks taken out. Basically it's a no-cost version of Red Hat.
- Gentoo - Installing Gentoo is not for the feint of heart. It is difficult to get started, but is very efficient and easy to maintain.
- IPCop - IPCop is a Linux distribution that serves only one purpose, that of a firewall. It takes over the computer and turns it into a firewall appliance, with an easy-to-use web-based interface. We use it extensively for setting up Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
- Red Hat Software, Inc. - Red Hat is easy to install and usually installs without any problems. It is well-tested, and probably the most common Linux distribution available. It's biggest downside is the cost for support and updates.
- SuSE - SuSE, a subsidiary Novell, became our recommendation since Red Hat abandoned its non-enterprise server series. Due to changes since that time, we rarely recommend it now.
- Ubuntu - Ubuntu is the current sweetheart of the Linux community. It is very easy to install and supports most hardware easily. We usually recommend Ubuntu as a desktop for those wanting to switch away from Windows without hassles.
